Model and Talent Management FAQ
We understand the industry can feel confusing and overwhelming. The questions below are the ones most commonly asked.
• What is a Model and Talent Manager?
Managers provides strategic guidance and mentorship to equip talent with everything they need to launch their careers, and pursue agency placement.
• What is a Model and Talent Agent?
Agents schedule auditions, manage bookings, and negotiate contracts.
• Is SAVVY an agency?
No. SAVVY directs and supports models and talents in advancing their careers and recommends agencies in Minnesota.
• Do managers and agents sign every model and talent that apply?
No. Managers and agencies have exclusive rosters.
• What does SAVVY look for when considering managing talent?
SAVVY represents a roster of vibrant women, men, and children of all ages. The most important attributes are talent, confidence, kindness, and positivity.
• How often does SAVVY have auditions and castings?
The primary goal is helping aspiring and established talent with their careers. When companies contact SAVVY for recommendations, models and talent on the roster are considered first before any open calls. There is not a set amount of castings.
• What type of bookings are possible with MN agencies and SAVVY?
Models and talent have landed exciting roles in films, television shows, commercials, print ads, magazines, billboards, shopping networks, voice-overs, hair shows, runway fashion shows, and “Big Game” commercials.
• How many auditions and bookings should I anticipate when working with an agent or SAVVY?
Your success will depend on the drive, talent, and the effort you put into your career. There are no guarantees that you will secure agency representation or bookings, however, we work with models and talent with the highest potential to succeed in the industry.
• How do I know if managers and agencies are legit?
SAVVY reviews are shared on the website and we only recommend Minnesota agencies we have worked with or are recommended by industry professionals. If you are seeking representation out-of-state or with agencies we do not know, it is important to do your own research.
• If I sign with an agency or find bookings on my own, does SAVVY take a percentage?
No. Agencies retain 15-20% of your payment if your booking is with them. Savvy retains 15-20% of payment if we work with you on a booking.
•Why don’t managers and agencies pay for everything?
Google searches can cause alarm when new models and talent try to figure out how agencies work. Articles may show you should never pay fees. In many cases, agencies in the Twin Cities charge a minimal on-boarding registration fee and annual renewal fees. This is a common occurrence in Minnesota and not necessarily a red flag. (However, if you submit to an agency that is not recommended by SAVVY, make sure to do your research before paying any fees.)
•Are there any costs associated in having SAVVY as a talent manager?
Yes. The rate covers a model coaching session, a photoshoot, two headshots, building an industry standard resume, mentoring, agency submissions, promotion on social media, and being on the SAVVY casting website. The goal is for you to have the best chance of pursuing auditions and being signed with an agent. Rates vary based on the age, experience, and marketing materials for the headshots.
•Will I need new headshots with SAVVY even if I already have headshots?
This is our most frequently asked question. Many models and talent have headshots, know other photographers, or have annual family photos taken. We will review the photos you have to see if they are industry standard. If so, and you have model experience, new photos might not be necessary. If you are new or have old headshots, a photo session might be necessary with a SAVVY photographer because we want to make sure you know how to move in front of the camera. If we recommend you to agencies or clients, we need to know you are ready.
• Should I apply to SAVVY if I don’t have any experience?
Absolutely. Welcome newbies! We’re here to guide you through the process. With SAVVY, you’ll get a headshot, resume, direction, and industry advice along the way. You’re not alone anymore. We’ve got your back.
• What if I already have experience and an agent?
We manage experienced talent too and have a special place in our SAVVY hearts for those who feel they have hit a ceiling in their career. We’ll take a look at your current marketing materials, agency relationship, and career goals. Whether you’re looking to advance your career with an agency or on your own, we’re here to help you with next steps.
•What options are available for workshops and classes?
Training is available in a variety of topics to help teach best practices which are crucial in securing roles. We offer self-tape classes, career consultations, and teleprompter training for beginning levels. Model and actor classes are not required. We offer them as an option for talent because this industry is highly competitive so the more experience you have, the greater your chance of success.
•Does SAVVY have auditions and castings?
Yes. SAVVY is also a casting service and companies come to us to find the best talent in town. Talent on our roster will be considered first to audition if the part is right for you. If there is a casting where SAVVY works to send you on an audition, manages logistics, manages the booking, and negotiates payment then there may be a 15%-20% booking fee. If you find an audition/booking on your own, through another third party, or through an agency, there is not a booking fee. We’ll just be excited for you and celebrate your success.
•Do you manage models and talent outside of Minnesota?
With a few exceptions, SAVVY manages talent who are within three hours of driving distance from the Twin Cities. Auditions can come up quickly so talent need to be able to make auditions the same day when zoom auditions are not possible. Most clients will require being in-person for bookings.
•Can I audition at night or on the weekends? What if I have a job Monday-Friday?
SAVVY meetings, photoshoots, and workshops can be arranged during the day, evenings, or weekends. Most agents and clients hold auditions and bookings between 8am and 6pm, Monday through Friday.
